INDEPENDENCE — An Independence Community College football player drowned late Wednesday night at the Montgomery State Fishing Lake south of Independence.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department identified the athlete as Khalil Fulton, 18, Lake City, South Carolina.
Montgomery County Sheriff Ron Wade said several individuals were swimming near the lake dock late Wednesday. Witnesses say Fulton did a flip off of the dock, resurfaced after going into the water and went back into the water again. He never resurfaced.
Wade said there was no indication Fulton was in distress.
Fulton’s body was found Thursday morning.
No foul play is suspected, but the investigation is ongoing, Wade said.
Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office received assistance from Montgomery County Rural Fire Department, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism and Coffeyville Fire Department water rescue personnel.
“This is a tragic situation where a young man lost his life, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” Wade said in a prepared statement.
