CHERRYVALE — USD 447 patrons are invited to meet with the school board next week to discuss facility needs.
The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Cherryvale High School cafeteria. Meeting participants can enjoy social time and chili from 5 to 5:30 p.m. This will begin a series of meetings with the purpose of creating a long-term plan for facilities maintenance and/or improvements. All adult patrons of the district are invited to attend.
The next scheduled meeting is Dec. 10.
The district failed a bond issue approximately in November 2018.
“The last plan for facilities improvements was not the right solution for our community, and our voters told us this at the polls last year. But our students still have needs related to facilities that are going unmet, so we have reflected on how to improve our planning processes and return back to the drawing board,” Superintendent Shelly Kiblinger said.
The first two meetings will focus on results of the district facilities survey and how those results can be used to guide discussions at future meetings.
“We will start our discussions over again from scratch in a search for better solutions. We are flipping the design of the conversations, starting by involving everyone who wants to be part of the conversation,” Kiblinger said. “If there’s interest in going forward with some sort of capital projects requiring a bond election in the future, then perhaps a subcommittee will form from this group to work out some of the details. However, we’ll just have to see who shows up for these initial meetings and take it from there. This will likely be a long series of conversations with our community members as we thoroughly explore a variety of instructional issues and needs related to school facilities.”
