SCAMMON — An early morning house fire Monday in rural Cherokee County claimed the life of a rural Scammon boy.
At 6:37 a.m., emergency personnel responded to 8543 Northeast Scammon Road, where a two-story home was engulfed in flames when first responders arrived.
Three year-old Jesse Walker died in the fire. His mother and a 10-month-old infant were able to escape.
Firefighters from Weir, Scammon, Galena and Columbus along with personnel from the Cherokee County Ambulance Service and sheriff’s office were dispatched to the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office.
