INDEPENDENCE — A farm-related accident killed an Independence veterinarian on Tuesday morning.

The accident happened at 11:59 a.m. Tuesday on CR 3670 south of Independence and east of CR 4150.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said when deputies arrived they found a tractor overturned in a creek. Deputies discovered the driver of the tractor, Dr. Richard “Doc” Barta, a veterinarian, had not survived injuries suffered in the accident.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Montgomery County Sheriff Ron Wade expressed his condolences to family and friends of Barta.

“If you have spent any time in or around Independence then you are probably familiar with Dr. Barta,” said Wade. “He was a great man and a good friend to many. Today marks a sad day. Today we lost a great man, and he will be greatly missed.”

Wade asks citizens to give privacy to the Barta family during this difficult time.
