Parsons Police Department K-9 Karim uncovered drugs and a stolen handgun during a recent traffic stop.

Parsons Police Department K-9 Karim uncovered methamphetamine and a stolen gun during a traffic stop last week.

Police arrested Danny Joe Cash Jr., 30, Parsons, Friday after Cpl. Kyle Shields and Karim conducted a traffic stop in the 2600 block of Chess Avenue. During the stop, Shields and Karim found illegal narcotics packaged for individual sale, a digital scale, syringes and a semi-automatic Taurus handgun. Further testing revealed the narcotics as methamphetamine.

Shields initially conducted the traffic stop on the vehicle because of defective equipment. While waiting for court paperwork, Shields deployed Karim to conduct a sniff of the car. After Karim gave a positive indication, Shields searched the vehicle, finding the drugs and stolen gun.

“I want to remind citizens that this is a prime example of why traffic stops are so important to the day-to-day activity of policing,” Shields said. “It is my hope that Karim and I can continue to find drugs and take them off the street and put the people responsible behind bars to stop them from spreading death in our community.”

Police asked the Labette County Attorney’s Office to charge Cash with sale and distribution of stimulants, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of stolen property, criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, defective tail lamps and no liability insurance.

This is an ongoing investigation. Citizens are encouraged to “see it, hear it, report it.” If anyone in the public had any further details on this incident or any other criminal activity, the police department requests people to call the department at 620-421-7060, the tip line at 620-421-7057 or email tips@parsonspd.com.
