Beauty Shop

Joshua Anderson shows some of the products he offers in his new store, Parsons Beauty Supply, which opened on Monday at 2631 Main St.

A new shop in town offers beauty supplies for people of color that are difficult or impossible to find locally.

Joshua Anderson of Independence opened Parsons Beauty Supply on Monday at 2631 Main St., the former location of A-Blossom For Every Occasion, which moved to 2701 Main.

“Parsons Beauty Supply was established to provide people of color with health and beauty products from all across the world,” Anderson said.

Most stores in Parsons don’t carry hair care products for Black people for some reason, Anderson said, so he decided to open a store so that people wouldn’t have to drive out of town to get those products.

“This was established really to help the community,” he said.

The store offers wigs and pre-stretched braiding hair, wig caps and wave caps and many different hair products for men and women. It also sells a small number of shirts as well as other items such as perfume, makeup and lotion. Anderson said while the shop focuses on products for Black people, there are products for everyone. He plans to add vitamins, supplements and other health care items later.

“It’s small right now, but I’ll be building inventory,” Anderson said.

Anderson also plans to add a barber shop/styling salon in one part of the store. His brother, Rico Anderson, is a licensed stylist in Wichita and will come to Parsons a couple of times a week. Joshua Anderson was attending Midwest Barber College in Topeka and will continue training later. He also was trained there for hot-towel facials, which he will offer at his store.

Additionally, Anderson soon will begin offering foot treatments, and he plans to have a massage therapist involved in the business also.

“We’ll see what happens, and I’ll just keep working at it and be positive,” Anderson said.

Anderson also plans to sell an energy drink that he markets and sells, Beast Juice, in the shop. The drink is sold online and in stores in Kansas City, Topeka, Lawrence, Independence and Tulsa, he said. Anderson also is a hip-hop artist, performing under the name Southeast Beast.

Parsons Beauty Supply is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. The store is open on Saturday also, but hours will vary.
