Relay for Life of Labette County will offer a day of remembrance this year but it will look different because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event will be Saturday, Sept. 26, and be divided between two locations.
The day starts with a fishing tournament at Big Hill Lake. Half of the entry fees collected will go to the first, second and third place winners and the other half will go to Relay For Life/American Cancer Society. The entry fee is $25 per person. Some of the money raised by Relay supports Hope Lodge in Kansas City, where 14 Labette Countians stayed this year.
Fishermen and women should check in at 6 a.m. at the Mound Valley boat ramp at Big Hill. Weigh-in will start at 2:30 p.m. Fishermen should bring their own boats or participants can fish from their favorite shoreline at Big Hill.
To register, contact Allison by phone, (620) 215-3865, or email, firstname.lastname@example.org, to reserve your spot.
At 6:30 p.m. Sept. 26, a drive-thru luminaria display/ceremony will take place at Forest Park in Parsons. Those who wish to drive around to see the lighted luminaria can listen to the radio broadcast, which will include the names of loved ones and their battles with cancer. The ceremony should last about an hour.
To purchase a $5 luminaria bag, visit the Labette County Relay Facebook page: www.relayforlife.org/labettecoks.
