The Labette Community College Board of Trustees listened to updates about roof repair on the college’s gymnasium and plumbing at the new event center, 1306 Main, formerly the Factory Connection building, when it met Thursday at the Student Success Center.
The college agreed to pay $80,000 to repair a leak on the main gym roof. If it rained during basketball games, the leak could cause LCC teams to forfeit, trustees heard.
Megan Fugate, administrative assistant to LCC President Mark Watkins and the board of trustees, noted that “this is not a new roof” but will close up an existing leak.
Additional work started Friday at the event center on South 13th Street, as contractors prepared to go under the street for plumbing and installing a waterline. The board approved Greg Hinman Construction’s base bid of $211,170. The event center, which contains 4,000 square feet, will also have a 14-foot by 20-foot kitchen added, two bathrooms and an 11-foot by 14-foot office space. New waterlines will be installed by or close to October.
The board also recognized LCC student and Phi Beta Lambda member Chandler Gravett for competing in the National Leadership Conference in San Antonio in June, earning seventh and 10th place in two events.
The board also approved:
— David Winchell as the new board chair; Rod Landrum will serve as vice chair.
— Moving the March 12, 2020, trustee meeting to March 5, 2020.
— The resignation of Marcie Ryan, case worker and adviser, effective Aug. 9.
— A contract for Tom Brungardt, biology instructor. The contract will begin Aug. 12 at a salary of $43,390.
— A 3% increase in salary for LCC’s administrative staff.
— Utilizing a grant that would allow the college to hire a success coach for students who may be at risk or academically challenged.
