COFFEYVILLE — A Coffeyville man was arrested Wednesday after speeding away from an officer trying to conduct a traffic stop.
Montgomery County Sheriff Ron Wade said deputies were called to CR 2200 and CR 5700 (east of Coffeyville) on Wednesday to investigate a suspicious vehicle that was pulling onto private property and looking around. The vehicle was described as a white Ford pickup with a blue tailgate. Once in the area, a Montgomery County deputy saw a vehicle matching the description near CR 2000 and CR 5300.
The deputy saw the driver, later identified as Jon H. Jones V, 48, of Coffeyville was not wearing a seatbelt. So the deputy attempted to perform a traffic stop and after a short distance the pickup pulled to the side of the road, according to a release from Sheriff Wade.
When the deputy approached the pickup, Jones began to threaten the deputy. After a short verbal exchange, Jones sped off and the deputy pursued. During the pursuit, Jones drove the truck into a ditch. Other deputies arrived and discovered Jones slumped over the steering wheel. Deputies removed Jones from the truck and Jones became combative. After a short altercation Jones was arrested.
Sheriff’s deputies are recommending Jones be charged with criminal threat against an LEO, interference with an LEO, attempting to flee or elude and various traffic offenses.
Wade said he was thankful the situation ended without injuries.
