Rock Quarry

The dump bed of a 1973 Euclid truck that can haul 40 tons is filled with rock by a Caterpillar wheel loader at the Labette County rock quarry south of Mound Valley Monday. The county commission is looking at future operations of the county quarry as the equipment there is aging and replacement parts for the Cedarapids rock crusher are more difficult to find. The quarry has 160 acres to mine for rock for county roads and the county has mined about 40 to 50 acres of it so far. The dark layer on the side of the quarry is shale.
