The Labette County jail advisory committee recommended building a new county jail in Oswego. A site northwest of the courthouse was chosen as an ideal location. Oswego Industries Inc. informed the committee and county commissioners that it would donate to the county a lot on Fifth Street. The lot cost $12,500. Under an agreement between the county and E.R. McKinney of Oswego, Oswego Industries would buy the land, which was a parking lot, from McKinney and donate it to the county. Perl Bass of Parsons, county commissioner chairman, said the site was ideal because it was adjacent to the courthouse.

The extended drought that forced Thayer city officials to impose water rationing on their 500 residents prompted city officials in Edna to raise the price of water in their city. Roy Fisk, an Edna city council member, said the city planned to increase its water rates about 25% to 30% beginning March 1 in an effort to cut down on the water used by its 500 people.

The Parsons girls basketball team had some long dry spells that led to its 48-37 defeat at the hands of Independence. But Parsons sophomore Toni Gross had a night to remember as she broke the state record for blocked shots in a season. Gross blocked three shots for the night, breaking the 123 set in 1990. Gross also scored 24 points for the game, and all 18 of the Vikings’ points in the first half. Coach Eddie Kearns cited Melissa Malone and Keli Cramer for their efforts on defense, but he said shots just wouldn’t fall for the Vikings. He said Julie Heiskell did a good job coming off the bench when Debbie Olson fell prey to a knee injury.
