Labette County commissioners voted on a split ballot to permit Carl Cloke, Labette County sheriff, to proceed with an application for state and federal funds for three additional deputies. Wayne Gillette of Oswego, commissioner chairman, and Perl Bass of Parsons voted for the proposal. Dale Westervelt of rural Mound Valley opposed it, saying he thought the sheriff’s department already was adequately staffed. The program administered under the federal Highway Safety Act would pay 75 percent of the salaries for three additional deputies and also would pay half of their mileage, figured at a rate of nine cents a mile. Gillette said the total cost to the county would be about $6,000 a year. The commissioners agreed to buy an additional car for the sheriff’s department if the new personnel were added.

Altamont USD 506 Board of Education members unanimously adopted a $6.68 million budget for the 1983-84 school year. The new budget called for an increase in the tax levy of 3.62 mills from the previous year. The budget was based on an enrollment of 1,600 students and a district valuation of $26.1 million, a decrease of $2.9 million from the previous year. A large portion of that decrease was from a farm machinery exemption from property taxes. The exemption cost the district $2.3 million in assessed valuation.
