Dec. 18, 1980

A Parsons police officer was reported in satisfactory condition at Labette County Medical Center after being shot the previous night. Officer Bill Villigan was conducting a routine check of a car parked 3/4 of a mile west of 32nd Street and North Boulevard. As Villigan approached the car it made a sudden U-turn, and three shotgun blasts were fired as the car passed the officer. One shot struck Villigan in the right elbow. The suspects, two white males in a blue 1977 Chevrolet Impala, were not found.

 

Dec. 18, 1990

Parsons High School senior Kali Pegues and junior Jennifer Saunders won the national qualifying debate tournament in Wichita. They were set to compete in the National Forensics League tourney in June in Chicago. It was the first time in the 60-year history of the Parsons debate program that a team had qualified for the national tournament.

City Manager Dick Combs received a nearly 19% salary increase, boosting his annual pay from $39,000 to $46,344. It was his first raise in five years on the job. Combs was named acting city manager in March 1985 and was hired as city manager in September 1985.  

 

Dec. 18, 2000

Contractors were putting the finishing touches on a new fitness center set to open in January. Performance Entertainment Center was located on South 16th Street just south of Power Flame. Corby Stickelman said he and his three co-owners planned to open the business on Jan. 5. The gym would feature a walking track surrounding the interior of the building, a juice bar, massage therapy, an aerobics room, dietary supplements shop and a fitness testing room.

The temperature reading on Dec. 17 of 5 degrees below zero in Parsons was the first sub-zero temperature in Parsons in almost four years. It was the first below-zero December reading since 1990. The previous low for the year was 2 degrees on Dec. 12 and 13. The all-time December low in Parsons since 1929, the first year for which monthly records were available, was minus 17 on Dec. 22, 1989.
