Samantha Graven of Parsons Public Library and Nancy Mechling of McCune Osage Township recently attended the Southeast Kansas Library System (SEKLS) series of workshops: “Library Director Bootcamp: Getting the Skills You Need.”
The two-hour sessions were held at Parsons Public Library on Nov. 6, SEKLS headquarters in Iola on Nov. 13 and Fredonia Public Library on Nov. 20. Sessions were presented via webinar by Kathy Parker and Kate Hall and were sponsored by the American Library Association. Topics covered included understanding and preparing financials, the trustee/director relationship, hiring, evaluating, disciplining and the legal ramifications of having staff.
The final session discussed facility maintenance, insurance needs and a review of general legal practices for libraries and pitfalls to avoid. Each 90-minute webinar was concluded by general discussion on how the principles work in small Kansas libraries and local experiences shared by participants.
