Barrett takes 3rd District seat on county commission

Tom Barrett won Tuesday’s election for the 3rd District seat on the Labette County Commission.

Barrett defeated incumbent Cole Proehl to advance to the November general election. He defeated Bradley Dutton 1,166 to 710 in Tuesday’s balloting. The results aren’t final until the Labette County Board of Canvassers reviews balloting on Nov. 18.

Barrett is a former Parsons police chief and security chief at the former Kansas Army Ammunition Plant, now called Great Plains Industrial Park. Barrett took his campaign to the people, getting out into his district and meeting with future constituents.

“That’s the old-fashioned way of electioneering.”

“I have been very gratified by a lot of people I’ve met and talked to and listened to,” Barrett said. He received good advice and won’t forget what the people told him.

He plans on getting oriented to the position he will take over in January and said he is researching a number of topics that have come up and that will come up. He plans on meeting with county employees in the coming weeks before being sworn in.

“I want to hit the ground running knowing a few of them,” he said.
