Police investigate shooting of juvenile

Parsons police are investigating a shooting from late Nov. 1 that injured a juvenile.

At 11:34 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, police were called to the 2400 block of Morgan Avenue for a report of a 13-year-old boy who had been shot and needed medical attention. Officers found that the juvenile had been shot in the neck.

Officers applied pressure to the wound until emergency medical services arrived.

The juvenile told officers that he was walking down the street and a dark colored car drove by and then stopped. He felt a sharp pain in his neck. The juvenile then ran to one of his friend’s houses to seek help.

Officers ensured that the juvenile was cared for and then transported to Labette Health and that his mother and sibling also went with him. The juvenile was then transported to another hospital for treatment.

Officers were given the clothing and items from the juvenile as the hospital had to remove them. They located .45-caliber ammunition from his pants. The officers then canvassed the neighborhood to look for evidence of the crime. Officers and detectives found a backpack belonging to the juvenile. In the backpack, they located an iPad and electronic cigarettes that were used for ingesting marijuana. They also located a small, black .45-caliber firearm. The firearm that was located had part of the serial numbers missing. It was later discovered that the firearm was stolen from a Parsons resident on Oct. 17 and is believed to have been in possession of the juvenile.

Police ask that any resident who has camera footage of the area from Friday night please review the footage and see if there is any information leading to the suspects of the shooting of the juvenile. Police believe that this incident is a targeted crime and not a random act of violence. The suspect(s) remains at large and police continue to search for a motive for the crime.

This continues to be an ongoing investigation and citizens are encouraged to “see it, hear it, report it.” All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. If anyone has any further information on this incident or any other criminal activity, please contact the Parsons Police Department at 421-7060, call the Tip Line at 421-7057 or email tips@parsonspd. com.
