Grizzlies girls punch state cross country ticket

CHANUTE — Labette County and Parsons will both be represented at the KSHSAA 4A Cross Country Championships in Wamego after their showings at Saturday’s regional race in Chanute.

Labette County’s girls took runner-up to qualify its entire team to state, while Truett Froebe and Jacob Haraughty punched tickets on the boys’ side. Parsons’ Colten Carson also earned a state bid.

Winfield won the girls’ regional title as a team with 28 points. Labette County took runner-up with 68 points, followed by Fort Scott (69), Chanute (76) and Mulvane (90).

In the girls’ race, Macie Moore won for Chanute with a time of 21:01, winning by 16 seconds over runner-up Winfield’s Cadence Stanley. Labette County’s Bethany Barger placed sixth with a time of 22:05. Anna Cantrell, who won the SEK League title the previous week, was seventh (22:14).

Aubrie Meyer placed 14th (22:43), Landry O’Brien 21st (24:01), Isabel Clevenger (24:43), Mikaela Carson 31st (25:34) and Kaylee Eberhart 32nd (26:00).

In the boys’ race, Winfield’s Talon Suttles won with a time of 17:20, edging out runner-up Jaron Powers of Chanute by four seconds.

Mulvane won the regional title as a team with 42 points. Chanute was runner-up with 50 points, followed by Winfield (66), Labette County (102), Coffeyville (117) and Fort Scott (142).

Parsons’ Carson placed fifth with a time of 17:36.

Labette County’s Froebe finished sixth (17:47), Haraughty 14th (18:02), Andrew Sykes 26rth (19:50), Colten Weil 30th (20:29), Jaden Geiger 35th (20:51), Lukas Elliott 37th (20:59) and Cooper Newby 39th (21:07).
