Capitol, receives firsthand look at legislative process

TOPEKA – At the invitation of State Senator Virgil Peck, R–Havana, on Thursday, February 19, over 30 seniors and their sponsors from Labette County High School traveled to Topeka to visit the State Capitol. The students were accompanied by Terry Smedley and Ana Plaza.

The students were able to take a Historical Tour of the Capitol and have lunch with Senator Peck, State Representative Del Helwig, R–Columbus, and State Representative Dan Goddard, R–Parsons. During the lunch, the House members spoke with the students about their job as legislators.

Since the Senate did not hold session on that Thursday it provided an opportunity for the students and Senator Peck to spend additional time visiting about the legislative process and taking pictures on the floor of the Senate.

A few weeks later, on Wednesday March 11, another group of Labette County students, seventh graders from Meadow View Grade School, also visited the State House. Sponsors with the students were Josh Ghering, Kim Smith and Kris Kastler. The seventh graders had the opportunity to climb the 296 steps to the top of the Capitol dome, walk the underground tunnel from the Capitol building to the Docking State Office Building and spend time on the Senate floor.

Senator Peck said, “It is always a delight to have students from ‘back home’ come to the Capitol. They were well behaved and I’m confident it is an experience they will remember for their lifetime.”
