During last week’s Parsons Rotary Club meeting, one member was recognized for his decades of membership and dedication. However, he was unaware that this would be happening.
Gary Wall has been a Rotarian for 60 years, and his club arranged Thursday’s surprise.
During the regular business of the meeting, Rotary Club President Roger Buck said he had tried to keep the meeting’s true purpose a secret.
“I didn’t want you all to know that John was going to come in to talk, or what he was actually going to talk about,” Buck said.
John Rains is Rotary District 6110 Governor, who traveled to Parsons for this meeting.
“It’s special to be here, and it’s a privilege as a district governor for our wonderful district to recognize an extraordinary Rotarian,” Rains said. “Gary Wall is celebrating an incredible milestone — 60 years of Rotary membership.”
Those in attendance clapped and cheered for Wall as Rains continued.
“I’d like for us to recognize 60 years is more than just an amount of time. It represents decades of service, fellowship, friendship, and a deep commitment to the ideals of Rotary,” Rains said. “Through countless meetings, projects, friendships and moments of service above self, you have not only helped shape this club but the community of Parsons through your legacy and your Rotary gifts.”
Rains said Rotary thrives because of members like Wall, who show up year after year with dedication and heart.
“Your example reminds us that Rotary is not just something we join — it becomes a part of who we are,” Rains said to Wall. “I often say Rotary made me better, and people like you, and your example make other people around you better.”

Rains presented Wall with a certificate to commemorate this membership milestone.
“This is in honor of you and your faithful service to this Rotary Club and to our district, and to Rotary itself,” Rains said.
Wall joined the Parsons Rotary Club in Tuesday, March 10, 2026 Page 5
December of 1965, and previously served as club president in 1971.
“I’ve never understood why you’d have to talk someone into joining a service club,” Wall said of his Rotary membership.
The Parsons Rotary Club meets weekly at noon on Thursdays at the Wall Family Center. For more information, visit www.facebook. com/RotaryClubofParsons.
