LOCAL SUB-STATE BASKETBALL BRIEFS

Labette County girls fall to Wamego

Playing the No. 2 seed on the road, the No. 15 Labette County Grizzlies girls fell to Wamego, 54-33, on Tuesday in the first round of the KSHSAA 4A East Sub-State Tournament.

“We battled hard and gave them a run with our defense early,” Labette County head coach Brianna Volmer said. “We just couldn’t lock down their second chance opportunities. They’re a great basketball team and a quality program. We gave them our best shot.”

Keelie Good led Labette County with nine points while senior Amery Baker had six points and 14 rebounds.

The season-ending loss leaves the Grizzlies with an 8-16 record.

“I’m proud of our team and our seniors,” Volmer said. “We can’t wait to see what their future holds. They have represented Labette County with class.”

Parsons girls routed by Rock Creek

Hitting the road to face the top seed in the KSHSAA 4A East Sub-State Tournament, the Parsons Vikings lost to Rock Creed, 71-23, on Tuesday.

Stats were unavailable at press time. The loss leaves Parsons with a 6-18 record to wrap the season.

Grizzlies boys pounced on by Paola

An end-of-season slide hit its end on Wednesday as the Labette County Grizzlies boys fell to the Paola Panthers, 75-40, in the first round of the KSHSAA 4A East Sub-State Tournament.

Paola commanded a 40-21 lead by halftime. In the loss, Nolan Nash and Barrett Hestand led the Grizzlies with nine points apiece.

Labette County, which started the year with seven wins in its first 10 games, ended the year dropping four of its final six.

The Grizzlies’ season ended with a 13-11 overall record.

Burlington girls best Cherryvale

After defeating Galena in the first round, the Cherryvale Chargers’ girls fell to the Burlington Wildcats, 49-38, in the second round of the KSHSAA 3A Sub-State Tournament on Wednesday night.

“These times are always the hardest,” Cherryvale head coach Kelsey Overacker said. “This is one of my toughest groups to let go. I know we battled. We started with 11 kids and then had 10 after one quit. They made it through a 23-game schedule and daily practices. They ran into a very good Burlington team and a crazy atmosphere. We battled all night with them. Both teams were all over the floor and left it all out there.”

Harmony John led Cherryvale with 15 points while Mia Smith added 13.

“We battled with a top team in 3A,” Overacker said. “I could talk for days about this group and they deserve every bit of praise they get. Tonight, we fell a little short.”

With the loss, Cherryvale’s season ends with an 18-7 record to its credit. The Chargers also earned a share of the Tri-Valley League crown.

Maycee Dean is the lone senior departing to graduation. “We return everyone else and I know this group has its sights set back on this stage,” Overacker said.
