At the Library

Below are the upcoming events at the Parsons Public Library.

Monday, March 2: 9 a.m.-1 p.m, AARP Tax Preparation Assistance; 4 p.m., Afternoon Story Hour for ages 7-10; 5 p.m., Line Dancing for all ages; 6 p.m.: Paint N’ Sip for all ages.

Tuesday, March 3: 10 a.m., Sensory Hour for ages birth-3; 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Veterans Benefit Assistance; 4 p.m., Anime Club for Teens.

Wednesday, March 4: 10 a.m., Story Hour for ages 2-6; 4 p.m., Afternoon Story Hour for ages 2-6.

Thursday, March 5: 9 a.m., Drums Alive Class for adults 60+; 4 p.m., Switch Freeplay for teens; 6 p.m., Ribbon Cutting Celebration for the completion of the window project.

Friday, March 6: 4 p.m., Let’s Cook! for teens; 6 p.m. Regular Library Hours are Monday-Friday: 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Saturday: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.; and closed on Sunday.

Prairie Dog Alliance

Founder Marjorie Reynolds will meet with the public at the Parsons Public Library during open hours this Tuesday.

Bartlett Community Church

The Bartlett Community Church will host a Sunday Country Breakfast on Sunday, March 1. Breakfast will be served from 7:30-9:30 a.m. The all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet menu will feature homemade sausage gravy served with biscuits, hash browns, scrambled eggs, egg casseroles, ham, sausage, fresh fruit, breakfast sweets, donuts, homemade cinnamon rolls, coffee, juice, and milk. Donations will be accepted to support the ministry and mission work of the church. The public is invited to attend.

Carryout will be available for those that do not want to dine in. The church is located at 712 Main on the south side of Bartlett. In case of severe weather conditions, call 620-423-1789 or 620-778-4635 to check for cancellation.

The church will not offer a community breakfast next month as Easter Sunday is on April 5.

Southeast Kansas Audubon Society

The Southeast Kansas Audubon Society will meet on Tuesday, March 3, at 7 p.m. Bob Gress of Wichita, will give a presentation on his new book. He is a well-known bird photographer and author. He has teamed up with Pete Jensen to produce a new book on Kansas birds.

The meetings are held at the Parsons Arboretum, at 2004 Briggs Ave. at the corner of 21st and Briggs in Glenwood Park in Parsons, Kansas. All persons interested in learning more about the natural world are invited to attend. For more information call 620-779-0830 or 620-779-2090, or 918-977-1502.

Storm Spotter Training

Labette County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service of Wichita will present a Storm Spotter Training at 6:30 p.m. on March 9, in the Parsons Memorial Auditorium. The event is free for the public and open to all ages.

East Central Kansas Model T Club

The East Central Kansas Model T Club will meet Thursday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the conference room of the Burlington Public Library. The club meets the second Thursday of the month at the Burlington Public Library, which is located on Highway 75 in Burlington.

A meal will be served prior to the meeting. The main entre’ and drinks will be provided. Attendees are asked to bring a side dish to share with the meal.

At the meeting members and guests will share information about working on and restoring their cars. In January, members attended seminars at the Winter Clinic held in McPherson. They will continue to share the information. In addition the club will discuss coming events and possible road trips of interest to the members.

Owning a Model T is not a requirement. All meetings are open to the public. For more information, contact Larry Tice at 620-364-8005.

Montgomery County Beekeepers Association

The Montgomery County Beekeepers Association will meet Thursday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m. This meeting will be held at Independence Community College West, at 2615 West Main in Independence. This meeting will focus on timely issues we need to think about before the busy beekeeping season is upon us.

Dan Mosier from the Heartland Beekeepers of S.E. Kansas will present a program on swarms and swarm traps. Also, James Coover with the K-State extension office will speak on plantings for honey bees, which will include perennials, woody bushes and tree species. He will also give tips on planting and growing these plants.

Parsons Livestock Market

Feb 18. Parsons Livestock Auction report: 1400 cattle were sold. Choice cows 164-176, canners- cutters 158-164, shelly cows 157 and down, bred cows up to $4,350, pairs up to $4,500, choice bulls 200-226, lower grades 199 and down.

Steers: Up to 400 pounds, 450-610; 400-500, 480-620; 500-600, 425-530; 600-700, 365-468; 700-800, 350-375; 800 and over, 291-353.

Heifers: Up to 400 pounds, 450-605; 400-500, 415-555; 500-600, 370-463; 600-700, 325-418; 700-800, 230-368; 800 and over, 230-315.

Here is the latest Parsons Livestock Auction report: 1000 cattle were sold Wednesday, Feb. 25. Choice cows 171-182, canners-cutters 160-170, shelly cows 159 and down, bred cows up to $3,700, pairs up to $4,900, choice bulls 200-229, lower grades 199 and down.

Steers: Up to 400 pounds, 426-672; 400-500, 450-605; 500-600, 410-567.50; 600-700, 390472.50; 700-800, 340-405; 800 and over, 245-365.

Heifers: Up to 400 pounds, 450-570; 400-500, 400-542; 500-600, 380-480; 600-700, 340-440; 700-800, 280-354; 800 and over, 260-329.
