Altamont HELP Committee hosts Labette County Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge

The Labette County Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge was held on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Labette County High School. Thirty students participated in the event, representing seventeen individual businesses.

The top business – awarded $1000 cash – was Gingerdoesnails, owned by Ginger Weathers. Other top businesses included second place – Dog Sitters Club presented by Taelyn Smith and Lily Gilreath; third place – Bawk Box by Claire Baker; and fourth place Acia Paradise by Chasnee Crissman and Sadie Kimrey.

The competition included three parts – a written executive summary (business plan), a four-minute presentation to a panel of judges and a trade show booth.

“We had some terrific business ideas this year and all of the students were bragged on by our panel of judges,” said Julie Beeman, of Kansas State Extension, Wildcat District.

The winning business automatically qualifies for a trip to the state competition held at K-State University in April.

The event is organized by the Altamont HELP (Hometown Economic Leadership Program) Committee in partnership with Network Kansas. The HELP Committee is part of the E-Community program through Network Kansas which offers gap financing loans to businesses in the Altamont/Labette County area.
