County N ews County hears zoning updates, website additions
OSWEGO — During Monday’s County Commission meeting, the commissioners heard several updates from Zoning Administrator Mel Hass.
Hass presented planned updates to the county website, which would include adding a “Planning and Zoning” section.
Hass provided documents outlining what would be included. Site visitors will be able to read about zoning regulations, the Zoning Department, the Planning Board, the Board of Zoning Appeals, and related county offices. The web pages will also provide contact information for Hass as Zoning administrator, as well as for Charlie Morse, who serves as the sanitation officer, and flood plain administrator in addition to his duties in emergency management. The site will also provide contact information for Great Plains Industrial Park.
Site visitors will be able to see contact information for members of the Planning Board, as well as see board agendas and minutes.
A copy of the fee schedule and information on how to obtain applications will also be available, as will copies of regulations, the district zoning map, the county’s land use plan, and relevant resolutions.

Hass also presented an agreement with Foster Design Associates LLC, for consulting services to the planning board. The total costs are not to exceed $2,500 throughout the year.
In discussion, Commissioner Terry Weidert asked Hass about nuclear zoning at Great Plains Industrial Park. Hass noted that Great Plains is zoned as an energy park, which allows for the current Deep Fission pilot project.
“If this is successful, and I hope it is — and they decide to put more in there, there is not enough room in the energy park, it will have to go through the zoning situation before expansion,” Hass said.
In resolutions, the commission voted to reappoint the following members to the Labette County Planning and Zoning Board: Mark Jones, four-year term; Lindsey Wilson, four-year term; Keith Keller, three-year term; Denny Sutton, three-year term; Christina Sykes, three-year term; Bob Spencer, two-year term; and Bill Owens; twoyear term.
In other business, the commission voted to approve an agreement to support the Labette Center for Mental Health, as they have done in previous years. The agreement will provide a levy of up to 0.948 mills to support the organization’s operations.
The next Labette County Commission meeting will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, at 9 a.m. in the Labette County Courthouse in Oswego.
