His story in history
Christiandom includes some different perspectives in belief. The Bible is one example: Some regard it as factually historic, divinely recorded to communicate God’s work and words to the world (2 Peter 1:19-21). Others would regard the Bible as a compilation of ancient oral legends, traditional narratives and stories of miraculous events in the form of religious historical fiction, including names, places and events that may or may not be actual history. While perspectives regarding its divine influence may vary, the Bible’s statement that “God cannot lie” must be considered in this regard (Titus 1:2).
The science of archaeology has profoundly impacted our perception of the Bible, and helped confirm the historical accuracy of parts of it. Of course, people come to different conclusions in interpreting evidence. The appearance of intelligent creative design in nature, and geophysical and documentary evidence of a worldwide flood are cited by some to confirm the biblical accounts of creation and Noah’s flood, while others come to quite different understandings.
While the Old Testament ‘s emphasis concerned the Jewish nation, the New Testament’s primary focus is the worldwide proclamation of the gospel of God’s Son Jesus as Savior. He died for our sins, and offers everyone reconciliation by repentance and faith in Him (John 3:16-18, Rom. 10:9-13). Believers are to be virtuous, living examples of his grace (Col. 1:10; 1 Thess. 4:1), and continue to share the gospel with others (Matt. 28:19-20, Mark 16:15-16).
How does one’s view of the historic accuracy of the Bible impact salvation in Christ Jesus? Since salvation is based entirely upon God’s grace and not our own merit, our less than perfect theological undersatndings do not prevent one from sincerely seeking God’s favor (Eph. 2:8).
When I asked Jezus to be my Savior many years ago. I knew little about the Scriptures. After salvation I developed an intense spiritual hunger to understand the Bible and grow in my understanding of God’s word. I believe it was the work of the Holy Spirit in my heart (1 Peter 2:2). Knowing that our eternal destinies are the most important choice in life, I felt compelled to work my way through ten years of Bible study at university level to prepare for ministry. I now consider myself a Bible believer.
Jesus Himself said “Search the scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life: and they testify of Me!” (John 5:39). Keep reading the Bible! Get to know God better!
