Struggling with turnovers against one of the area’s deadliest backcourts, the Parsons Vikings boys lost to the Independence Bulldogs, 81-27, on Tuesday night in SEK League play.
“Give credit to Independence,” Parsons head coach Anthony Houk said. “Our first few possessions were solid and we got some good looks at the basket. Tonight, we ran some offense and didn’t get back on defense. That meant we gave up some layups. Independence has a very experienced backcourt and they made us pay in a lot of different ways. They shot the ball great.”
Javen Colbert led all scorers with 25 points for the Bulldogs. Ian Martinez added 18.
Preston Heitman and Isaac Mack led Parsons with seven points apiece.
Parsons fell to 0-9 with the loss.
“It’s tough. I’m not going to lie,” Houk said. “It’s hard when you have a winning record with teenagers because the season spans over such a long period of time. So it’s really tough when you’re losing. Right now, we’re challenging the guys to not beat ourselves. Right now, the way we’re turning it over, we’re our toughest opponent.”

Parsons hosted Burlington on Thursday. The Vikings then compete in the Lancer Classic at Southeast High School next week in Cherokee.
“We’ve just got to make sure our focus is staying positive,” Houk said. “It is what it is. The team this year is in a valley. We’ve got to climb out of it. We won’t unless we keep a positive mindset.”
