Jason Hinson was fired as head coach of the Labette Cardinals men’s basketball program on Tuesday according to multiple sources.

Hinson confirmed to the Sun that he was fired for violating school policy and didn’t resign, but denied further comment on the matter.

Labette Athletic Director Aaron Keal didn’t respond to a request for comment by the Sun.

Players were informed during a meeting late Tuesday afternoon.

Sources also indicated that assistant coach Ben Vozzola, who joined Hinson’s staff in the offseason, is currently the interim coach for the Cardinals. However, sources claim that Labette is exploring its options. Labette’s first game post-Christmas is scheduled for next Wednesday at home against Neosho County.

Labette is currently 9-8 overall and won its last two games before the holiday break. The nine wins have already surpassed last year’s win total of eight.

Hinson was hired to be Labette’s head coach in 2022 after serving five years as the assistant to Jerrod Stanford.

Hinson went 13-14 in 2022-23 and 1021 in 2023-24 before last year’s 8-23 campaign.

Labette was Hinson’s first job as a college head coach.

After coaching with MOKAN, one of the top travel programs in the country, he took assistant jobs at St. James Academy at the high school level, NOC-Tonkawa and Northwest Oklahoma State before joining Stanford’s staff at Labette.
