Artists and graphic design students showcased their semester projects in the Labette Community College Hendershot Gallery, ending with a closing reception on Friday, Dec. 4.

“It’s a semester-based exhibit that we do twice a year,” Gallery Director Burt Bucher said.

“It shows off all the art and design students’ work from all our studio courses, graphic design courses, including photography, all the fine arts — ceramics and drawing.”

Bucher said students are also recognized with awards for the best pieces in each category, as well as the Latzer Art Award.

“The Latzer award is by John and Bonnie Latzer,” Bucher said. “They’ve been really wonderful in donating their time and effort into this. So, a student will receive a $500 award for being the Best of Show, and it goes toward their scholarship and books.”

Samantha Noble, a freshman, had both photography and graphic design work featured in the exhibit.

“I like taking pictures of nature. Pretty much all my pieces are somewhat of nature,” Noble said.

She highlighted photos she’d taken of a waterfall, fall leaves, and a spiderweb.

“I like to take pictures of nature because sometimes you might see stuff every day and it gets boring — but when you take a different angle, a different approach to it — you can kind of see it for what it’s worth and the beauty in it,” In her graphic design work, Noble said one of her favorite projects was a typography art piece, creating a moth using the word “wings” using different fonts and colors.

Tabitha Grant, a graphic design student, said one of her favorite projects was designing branding for a fictional Goblin Gummies brand.

“It was kind of hard because the original dimensions of the design was bigger than the margin area where you could put your text, so that it doesn’t get distorted or torn off when they tear the top of the packaging,” Grant said. “So it was kind of a struggle to make it all readable and fit into that space.”

Grant said she also enjoyed creating a magazine advertisement for Tiffany & Co. jewelry and using additional editing skills.

“I like how with the waterfall, I can make the hand actually look like it is in the waterfall,” Grant said.

Of having her work on display, Grant said it was a nice opportunity to have family, such as her grandmother, come to see it.

“I’m enjoying it. It’s a great thing for them to be able to show off their work,” Grant’s grandmother, Wanda Longan said.

Bucher said students’ artwork was evaluated by a committee who judged the artwork blindy, with no names.

The awardees were as follows: — 2D Design: Savannah Beaty – Cut Paper Illustration “Through the Glass.”

— Art Appreciation: Ariel Adams – Watercolor “Messy Fruit.”

— Ceramics: Bonnie Merritt – “Slab Crock with Nesting Bowls.”

— Drawing: Derrick Keeton – Pastel “Men with the Giant Boot.”

— Commercial Graphics: Carter Swanson – Billboard Design “Billboard Design.”

— Digital Photography: Lauren Harrison – Nature Photograph “Come In.”

— Packaging Design: Abby Upton – Playing Card Box Design “Glass Deck.”

Adams also received the Latzer award for her photograph, “Reflection.”
