ST. PAUL — Dropping all three games of the Mark Terlip Classic, the St. Paul Indians’ home tournament ended with a 54-10 loss to the Riverton Rams on Saturday.
“Our girls grew a lot,” St. Paul head coach Danielle Cummings said. “We only have three girls on the team that played high school basketball consistently last year. We’ve got six freshmen and start two of them. So it’s a big adjustment. I think we got better each game in the tournament. It’s been tough. But it does us good playing tough teams. It shows us where we want to get to. The girls handled it well.”
On Thursday, St. Paul lost to Plaza Heights Christian Academy, 53-43. Kaydra Mathis led St. Paul with a dozen points while Kyndahl Venneman added 11.
As for Friday, the Caney Valley Bullpups took down St. Paul, 65-28.
Venneman led St. Paul with nine points.
“Our girls competed until the very end and our bench stayed involved,” Cummings said. “I’m proud of how they handled a tough weekend.”
St. Paul is 1-3 through four games. A Dec. 5 win over Chetopa marks St. Paul’s lone win.
“The girls honestly see what they need to work on,” Cummings said. “It motivates them. They don’t like to lose. So now they understand we have to go hard in practice everyday — for the entire practice. I think these games motivated them more than deterred them.”
Riverton’s girls won the Mark Terlip Classic title.
