Hunting momentum with SEK League play at their doorstep, the Parsons Vikings girls won once and lost twice in the T-Bird Classic last week.
Parsons opened the early season tournament with a Tuesday loss to Mulvane, 5727.
Braelyn Hinman-Mitchell led Parsons with seven points while Ayanna Robertson added six.
The Vikings earned their first victory of the season on Thursday, taking down Collegiate at home, 53-32.
“I feel really good for the kids,” Parsons head coach Erik Lyons said. “The kids have been working their tails off. They’ve given us everything we have. I’m super excited. This season is about them. They’ve had the right mindset, so they deserved a win.”
Hinman-Mitchell again paced the Vikings with 16 points.
“She was great,” Lyons said. “She took a lot of stress off against the press. She can score from all three levels. She’s crafty around the rim and she can knock down free throws. Her confidence is building every night. This is something she can do regularly.”
The Vikings’ offense was slow to get going but revved up as the night progressed.
“The slow start was a little bit of jitters,” Lyons said. “Both teams mirrored each other. We struggled to take care of the basketball and play with energy early. We had to take care of the basketball and not have self-inflicted turnovers. We had to rebound like crazy. And we had to play with energy and have fun. We did that as well as we have all season.”
Robertson added 12 points against Collegiate.
“She is definitely capable of putting up big numbers and doing big things,” Lyons said. “I’ve asked her to be a little selfish because she has the skill. I ask her to do a lot of things on the court — bring the ball up against a press, then run down to the post. There’s not a harder worker than her. So I see good things coming in the near future.”
The Vikings fell to 1-3 on Saturday, losing to Circle, 3831.
Robertson led Parsons with 10 points.
