ST. PAUL — Attempting to resurrect the Chetopa Green Hornets girls program, first-year head coach Vince Yanez took his team to the Mark Terlip Classic in St. Paul.
There, the Green Hornets suffered a trio of lopsided losses. “December is an experiment for all of us,” Yanez said. “When we get back from Christmas, we have to implement more of an offense. On defense, we want to be in shape. That’s what these games were for. We have to put on a press and get some steals. We have to open up the game to help the girls out.”
On Thursday, Chetopa lost to Caney Valley, 91-4. The Green Hornets then lost to the Riverton Rams, 66-3. Chetopa’s tournament ended on Saturday with a 66-7 loss to Plaza Heights Christian Academy.
“I’m seeing improvement, but it’s not consistent,” Yanez said. “We’re playing some good competition right off the bat. It’s a learning experience. Hopefully we can get better in league play. We’re seeing small spurts of good things. They’re understanding we can work the ball in and out. But we’re shorthanded, so we’re limited in what we can do right now. I’m figuring out the girls and their capabilities.”

Chetopa heads north to face Oswego on Tuesday.
“I’m taking baby steps and we’ve got a big mountain to climb,” Yanez said. “We’re seeing girls who have hardly played the game before hustle. We’re going to keep learning.”
