Grizzlies’ offense goes cold against Raiders

ALTAMONT — Hoping Friday night isn’t a sign of foreboding, the Labette County Grizzlies girls fell to the Frontenac Raiders, 63-25, on Friday night.

“There were just so many turnovers,” Labette County head coach Brianna Volmer said. “We struggled so much. I knew we’d be anxious. But we didn’t handle our nerves very well. We were amped up and couldn’t think. I don’t think that was a true look at what our potential is. I’m hoping we get past that nervous energy and just play.”

Friday’s season opener got away from Labette County midway through the first half as the Grizzlies’ offense went ice cold.

“We were in a good position at the end of the first quarter,” Volmer said. “I thought we’d get over the hump. But we didn’t win the turnover battle or the battle at the free throw line and it unraveled from there. We couldn’t get any continuity going. I tried to throw different kids in there and it just snowballed. The kids will be resilient and work past this.”

Paityn Davis’ seven points led the Grizzlies while Amelia Carnahan added six.

Reece Franklin led Frontenac with 14 points.

“I got a good look at some different kids and what they do and don’t bring to the table,” Volmer said. “We’re not going to go back to the drawing board. We just have to be more fundamental. I don’t think we were in any phase of the game. We’ve got to take care of the basketball. That’s what being a basketball player is.”

Labette County plays in the T-Bird Classic this week, where they’ll face Circle on the road Tuesday, Mulvane at home on Thursday and Collegiate in Towanda on Saturday.

“This tournament is a dogfight,” Volmer said. “We can’t think we’ll win any game because of what we did last year. We’ve got to deal with adversity and take it one step at a time.”
