The Parsons Area Chamber of Commerce is honored to announce Aaron “Skip” Smith as the Grand Marshal for the 2025 Parsons Area Christmas Parade. A proud Parsons native, dedicated volunteer, and lifelong ambassador for community spirit, Skip embodies the heart, history, and hope of the Parsons family.

Smith was born and raised in Parsons, one of eight children of Beatrice Stevenson and Emmitt Smith. Deeply influenced by his mother’s belief that “if you’ve been blessed with a little more than someone else, you should share it,” Skip has carried that philosophy throughout his life. “This is my hometown,” he said. “I’m part of the Parsons family, and the Parsons family is part of me.”

A 1968 graduate of Parsons High School, Smith attended Douglas School before Parsons schools were integrated and later served in the United States Navy. Though his service took him across the country, from Denver to Kansas City, Wichita, New Jersey, New York, and Atlanta, he always knew he would return home. After completing his military service, he fulfilled his goal of graduating from Labette Community College in 1973.

Skip returned to Parsons permanently in 2001, the same year he married his wife, Debra (Moss) Smith of Oswego. Together, they share a blended family of three children. Since returning, Skip has remained a steadfast volunteer and community advocate, lending support wherever it is needed and strengthening the sense of unity that defines Parsons.

When asked about his favorite part of Christmas in Parsons, Skip reflects on the joy he felt as a child, even during years when gifts were scarce. “Sometimes we didn’t get anything, but the joy that the season brought was everything,” he recalled. “That spirit is what makes Christmas in Parsons special.”

Chamber Executive Director Liz Cochran said honoring Skip is both meaningful and long overdue. “Skip is a living legend in Parsons. He is known by so many and celebrated by all. I have known Skip for over 20 years, and I’ve witnessed firsthand his generosity and his willingness to help wherever he is needed. I am so pleased we get to honor him this year.”

The 2025 Parsons Area Christmas Parade will take place Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. in Downtown Parsons. The community is invited to celebrate Skip Smith and kick off the holiday season with festive cheer.
