
ROWLETT, Texas — Sybil Sue (Cooper) Smith was born Feb. 16, 1936, in Parsons, to Harold Layton and Opal Edith (Tracy) Cooper. She passed away peacefully on Oct. 27, 2025, at age 89.
She is survived by her sons: Alan Smith (Leasa Liles), Scott Smith (Teresa), daughter: Tracy Pence (Dan); grandchildren: Stephanie Smith (John Shaffer), Travis Smith (Jamie), Andrea Diaz, Benjamin Pence (Samantha), Andrew Smith (Giovanny Bobadilla), Stacy Cavalier (Chris), Meagan Liles, and Grant Liles; great-granddaughters: Berkley and Peyton Smith; and brothers: Harold “Bud” Cooper (Judy), Charles Cooper (Betty), and Steve Cooper (Becky). She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Dub” Smith Jr., and her parents.
Sue was Honored Queen of Parsons Bethel 29, Job’s Daughters, and earned an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts from Parsons Junior College in 1956. She married Dub, her high school sweetheart, on Sept. 15, 1956, at the Washington Avenue Methodist Church in Parsons. In 1959, they moved from Parsons to Garland, Texas, where they raised their family.
Sue worked for Garland ISD for 24 years and was active in church life at First Rowlett United Methodist Church, participating in the Nomads Sunday School Class and Golden Classics until her health declined. She enjoyed watching and supporting her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her hobbies included square dancing, puzzles, Bible studies, sports, and game shows. Sue was known for her amazing chocolate chip cookies.
Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 4, at the Rowlett Methodist Church in Rowlett, Texas. Burial was in Restland Cemetery in Dallas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (in honor of Dub) or the Susan G. Komen Foundation (in honor of Sue).
