2 Labette County residents die in separate accidents

Two Labette County men died in accidents on Saturday in Southeast Kansas.

An Altamont man was killed in a rollover accident early Saturday morning west of Parsons.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports that the driver, Spencer Alec Gatewood, 30, died at the scene of the accident.

According to the KHP, at 3:40 a.m. Saturday Gatewood was eastbound on 24000 Road about a half of a mile east of Jackson Road when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road. His 2019 Hyundai Elantra entered the south ditch and overturned in a pond.

Gatewood was pronounced dead at the scene. CHERRYVALE — A Parsons man died in a two-vehicle collision on U.S. 169 near Cherryvale on Saturday night.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports that one of the drivers, Matthew Wayne Creed, 33, of Parsons died at the scene of the wreck.

According to the KHP report, at 9:20 p.m. Saturday Creed was driving a 2008 Toyota Scion northbound on U.S. 169. A 2025 Freightliner driven by Lumomba Kwanbene Idlette, 52, of Fort Myers, Florida, was southbound on U.S. 169. Creed’s car crossed the center line and entered the southbound lane.

Both vehicles took evasive action onto the northbound shoulder where the two vehicles collided head-on, the KHP reported. The collision happened 5.5 miles south of U.S. 400.

Creed was pronounced dead at the scene. Idlette did not sustain any injuries and also wore a seat belt.
