Free coin appraisals
Members of the Parsons Coin Club will hold the final free coin appraisal opportunity of 2025 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at the Labette Bank, 2121 Main St.
Members of the local club will assist individuals in identifying and evaluating their accumulations of old coins, currency and related items.
“Throughout this year, the Parsons Coin Club has conducted free coin appraisals for members of the local community to learn more about their old money,” said Dave Sorrick, long-time member of the local club. “We will be back for one more opportunity for folks to get an idea of what their collections are worth in today’s record- setting market. 2025 has seen record-high prices for silver and gold, and this is reflected in the value of our collections. This service is free of charge as an outreach service of the club. We are very grateful to Labette Bank for hosting us in such a fine location,” Sorrick added.
The Parsons Coin Club meets on the third Thursday evening of each month at the Senior Center, 1800 Belmont. Area coin collectors are invited to attend.
Meeting to focus on transportation priorities
The Kansas Department of Transportation is inviting citizens to share ideas and discuss regional transportation needs concerning highways, public transit, pedestrians and more at Local Consult meetings taking place across the state in October. The closest meeting will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium, 503 N Pine St. (southeast Kansas, District 4).
“We want to hear directly from Kansans about what transportation improvements are important to them,” said KDOT Secretary Calvin Reed. “Those attending the Local Consult meetings will be providing input on what projects KDOT should prioritize for future infrastructure improvements.” Attendees will also learn more about transportation investments in their area and various grant funding programs available through KDOT.
Blood drive set Oct. 23
The Parsons community blood drive to benefit Labette Health and other medical facilities will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Cardinal Event Center, 1306 Main.
The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks is sponsoring the drive. Football fans will have a chance to get a Kansas City Chiefs Kingdom T-shirt, while supplies last, for those who successfully donate.
Donors can also enter for a chance to win a game day package that includes two tickets and a parking pass to Kansas City’s Dec. 14 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. The game package is valued at $585.
“The Chiefs promotion is a fun and meaningful way to rally our community around a cause that truly matters,” said Michelle Teter, media relations representative at Community Blood Center of the Ozarks. “When you donate blood, you are suiting up for your community and making a play that saves lives. Just like the Chiefs rely on teamwork to win on the field, our hospitals rely on generous donors to help patients in need. Go the extra yard and enter for a chance to watch a game at the Kingdom, while making a real difference close to home.” To help avoid wait times, appointments are strongly encouraged. Donors can schedule an appointment at www. cbco.org/chiefs or by calling 417-227-5006.
