Audubon meeting is Oct. 7

The Southeast Kansas Audubon Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Parsons Arboretum, 2004 Briggs, which is at the corner of 21st and Briggs in Glenwood Park in Parsons.

Ryan Lies, wildlife area manager of Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, will present a program on the history and wildlife habitat management of the Elk City Wildlife Area.

The public is always invited and refreshments will be served following the program.

Children’s author at library

Jack Ellison is a children’s book author and will be featured at the Altamont Public Library’s “Authors in Our Own Backyard” series this week. He is a Labette County resident who is new to the publishing field. Jack’s debut book, “Charlie, the Skunk Who Never Stunk,” was released earlier this year.

A book talk and signing will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Altamont Public Library, 407 S. Huston. All are welcome to attend.

Back the Blue breakfast

BARTLETT — The Bartlett Community Church will serve its regular Sunday country breakfast this Sunday, Oct. 5, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the church, located on the south side of Bartlett at 712 Main. The breakfast will be in conjunction with a “Back the Blue” celebration. All donated proceeds from the country breakfast will go to the Labette County Sheriff’s Office to help any of its families in need.

The all-you-can-eat menu will feature homemade sausage gravy served with biscuits, hash browns, scrambled eggs, egg casseroles, ham, sausage, fresh fruit, breakfast sweets, donuts, homemade cinnamon rolls, coffee, juice and milk.

Area law enforcement officers and their families along with the public are invited to the breakfast. In appreciation for the service and protection they provide to our communities, the breakfast is offered free to law officers and their families.

Beauty and the bees

FRANKLIN — A special program, Beauty and the Bees, is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at the Miners Hall Museum, 701 S. Broadway, in Franklin.

This program will be presented by Patti and Phil Street of the Cherokee County Beekeepers Association. They will provide information on keeping bees as a hobby or just providing a safe habitat on your property for pollinators to forage for food, nest and raise their next generation.

Weather permitting, the presentation will include an onsite observation of a honeybee hive that allows guests to watch the bees as they work inside caring for their babies, processing nectar into honey and other daily tasks.

Beekeepers plan Oct. 9 meeting

INDEPENDENCE — The Montgomery County Beekeepers Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, at Independence Community College West, 2615 W. Main St., in Independence.

Since most of the honey has been extracted and some colonies have been medicated to control varroa mites, it is time to determine what else beekeepers need to do to make sure bees remain strong and healthy going into fall and winter. Jason Elmore will provide information on what we should be doing this fall to make sure bees are ready for winter, safe from predators and will have enough food to get them to the first spring nectar flow.

Those seeking answers on beekeeping are welcome.
