HUMBOLDT — Rolling to their first win of the 2025 campaign, the Humboldt Cubs cast down the Erie Red Devils, 42-12, on Friday night.

“We made a lot of changes in the week. There were wholesale changes,” Humboldt head coach Logan Wyrick said. “We had some injuries that occurred. So it was great to see us come out, run a completely different offense and defense, and execute. We had some issues and growing pains. But they did a great job.”

In a battle between a pair of winless programs, the Cubs finally looked like themselves. Humboldt led, 42-0, before surrendering a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

“My Saturday and Sunday last week were way different. I won’t say I created a new offense, but it was completely different,” Wyrick said. “We’ve got guys like Mason Sterling that we want to have the ball in space. It was different play calls and a different system and they did a good job with it.”

Mason Sterling led the Cubs’ offense with 177 yards rushing and four touchdowns. He also completed 3-of-6 passes for 62 yards and a score.

“We stayed on blocks and that’s what it’s going to take,” Wyrick said. “We did some good things to be successful. It was all new for the guys, which is wild to think about. The changes made every bone in my body cringe. But now we want to build on it going into district play.”

Layne Wagner added 100 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown.

Broc Ivy led Humboldt with 10 tackles, including four for a loss.

Friday’s performance was a breath of fresh air for a Humboldt team that started winless after going 10-1 a year ago.

“It wasn’t necessarily the losses,” Wyrick said. “Caney and Cherryvale are both good teams. We didn’t compete the way we should have. We had a couple of injuries in the summer and at the start of the year.”
