Solid waste committee to consider hike in trash fees
The Labette County solid waste committee will meet next week to consider a request to increase fees charged at the county-owned transfer station south of Parsons.
GFL Environmental operates the transfer station, gathers solid waste dumped there by participating communities and private haulers and then trucks the material to its landfill in Arcadia.
The new fees, if approved, may not go into effect until 2026.
The meeting will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 1712 Corning in Parsons.
The committee met Wednesday but hadn’t provided ample notice under the Kansas Open Meetings Act and the panel didn’t have enough members attending to vote, so the meeting was delayed a week.
Cities now pay $45.14 a ton to dump trash at the transfer station. GFL signed a 10-year contract in 2023 to operate the transfer station. The contract increases a percentage each year based on inflation.
GFL asked some time ago to increase rates. Proposals being considered are increasing the dumping fee to $56 to $65 a ton for rear-loaded trash trucks and $75 for roll off boxes and any trash from out of county customers.
Committee member Josh Hucke also asked GFL General Manager Matt Sanders on Wednesday to consider the cost of accepting Labette County trash at Arcadia if another operator/hauler arrangement could be made from the transfer station.
The meeting on Wednesday may include a closed session to discuss confidential financial information of a corporation.
