OSWEGO — Keeping the St. Paul Indians at arm’s length, the Oswego Indians won, 65-18, for their first win on Friday night in Week 2.
“I was pleased with our level of physicality,” Oswego head coach Matt Fowler said. “We took a step up from the previous week. We showed improvement in some areas, especially offensively. We played a much better game. We still had a lot of penalties that moved us back. We’ve obviously got to clean that up. And I was impressed with St. Paul. They’re a tough team. They really hung around with us. It was a good game and they made a run at us. They just kept coming after us.”
After pulling within 14 points in the second quarter, Oswego ended the game on a 39-6 run.
“We wore down,” St. Paul head coach Keith Wiatrak said. “We got tired and sloppy and they were just more physical than us at the point of attack on both sides of the ball. My kids played hard, though.”
Demetri Williamson, a star sophomore for Oswego, racked up 211 rushing yards and five total touchdowns.
“He had a good game, obviously. Some of that was from us blocking better than the previous Friday night,” Fowler said. “He also just made some plays. There was a high snap that was supposed to go to another back. He picks up eight yards on a play that would’ve been a disaster. He can really cover up a lot of mistakes. He was able to find the vertical seams much better this week. He gets a lot of attention, so there’s cutback lanes. And he found those.”
Braden Wary led Oswego with 12 tackles.
“He’s one of the few real veterans we have,” Fowler said. “He’s a threeyear starter and played really well on both sides of the ball. He doesn’t show up in the stat sheet as much as he deserves. He really makes sure everybody knows their blocking schemes. He makes sure we’re set up well on defense. I’m really proud of him.”
For St. Paul, Brec Norris tallied two total touchdowns while completing 8-of-11 passes for 74 yards.
“He played really hard,” Wiatrak said. “But he got tired, too. He had to take on a role where he’s got some young kids in front of him. And he does a nice job.”
Oswego and St. Paul both moved to 1-1 overall.
Up next
Oswego faces Crest in Week 3 at home.
“They do a great job but I know they’re pretty beat up with injuries,” Fowler said. “Crest is a unique challenge because they run a ton of formations on offense. They do a good job of getting you into different situations and have some pretty unique pass concepts. They have receivers they’ll put out in space. So they’re a challenge from a gameplan standpoint.”
As for St. Paul, it faces Yates Center.
“They are better than last year and have more kids out,” Wiatrak said. “They played Crest really tough in the first game of the season.”
