KGS works to restore service in 2nd Ward

Kansas Gas Service was still in the process on Thursday of restoring natural gas service to customers in Parsons’ 2nd Ward after air got into the line.

KGS announced Wednesday it had shut off gas service to about 400 customers in an area east of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks to 10th Street, south of Corning and north of Southern.

According to the KGS posting, air inadvertently got into the system during routine maintenance. As a safety precaution, KGS turned off meters at homes and businesses in Parsons located in that area. KGS crews started the process of relighting customer appliances early Wednesday morning.

An adult must be present for the crews to enter the house and relight appliances. If no one answers the door, crews will leave door hangers with a number for customers to call.

“Safety is our top priority,” according to the post.

Kristen Veverka, public relations manager for KGS, said Thursday morning that 150 customers are still without gas service.

She didn’t have the specifics on how air got into the system, but noted that safety and service are KGS’ top priorities.

“As a precaution, we temporarily shut off service to the affected area to conduct safety checks. So far, we have restored natural gas to more than half of those impacted. .... Our crews will continue restoring service until everyone is taken care of,” Veverka said.

She said anytime KGS has customers without service, the crews make it a priority to get them back on as quickly as possible.

To restore service, technicians must enter homes or businesses to complete safety checks and relight appliances, and an adult must be present in the home, she said.

She reminded customers that if they smell a sulfur-like odor, observe blowing dirt, bubbling water or hear a hissing or roaring sound near natural gas piping, meters or appliances, it may indicate a natural gas leak. Should you notice any of these warning signs, leave the area immediately and then call 911 and the KGS gas emergency line at 888-482-4950.
