Sunday country breakfast

BARTLETT — The Bartlett Community Church will serve a Sunday country breakfast from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the church, 712 Main, on the south side of Bartlett. The all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet menu will feature homemade sausage gravy served with biscuits, hash browns, scrambled eggs, egg casseroles, ham, sausage, fresh fruit, breakfast sweets, donuts, homemade cinnamon rolls, coffee, juice and milk. Donations will be accepted to support the ministry and mission work of the church. The public is invited to attend.

Carryout will be available for those who do not want to dine in. In case of severe weather conditions, you can call 620-4231789 or 620-778-4635 to check for cancellation.

Forestry field day

CHERRYVALE — The Kansas Forestry Association will have its fall field day from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Philip Eastep property, 4742 County Road 5800, Cherryvale. The property features research sites, trails, a tree farm and columbarium. The site is located in the Cross Timbers ecosystem.

Presentations will include the forest legacy program, Cross Timbers, forest to mill to kiln, the carbon credit program and conserving forest ecology.

Funeral association names new officers

TOPEKA — Kansas Funeral Directors Association (KFDA), the only organization in the state dedicated to promoting and supporting funeral professionals in Kansas, announced new leadership for its Board of Directors as of May 6. The new executive officers include Marty Mendicki, of Parsons, who is the immediate past president, having served as president in 202525. Chris Holland of Olathe is the new president.

Mendicki is a licensed funeral director and embalmer at Carson-Wall Funeral Services in Parsons. He graduated from Parsons High School in 1992 and attended Labette Community College before earning a Bachelor of Science in Funeral Service in 1996 from the University of Central Oklahoma at Edmond. He also attained the designation of Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (C.F.S.P.) in 2010. Mendicki was elected to the KFDA Board of Directors in the fall of 2016.

The KFDA also announced Mendicki as its 2025 Funeral Director of the Year. He received the award at the 2025 Tri-State Convention in Overland Park on May 6.

“The KFDA appreciates Marty’s unwavering commitment, professionalism, and compassion which has impacted numerous families during their most challenging times,” KFDA Executive Director Tiffany Fisher said.

Mendicki has served on various boards in Parsons and currently serves as president of the Parsons Community Development Corp. and Parsons Educational Foundation. He also serves on the Strategic Planning Committee at the Labette Community College and the Public Safety Advisory Board in Parsons. He is a member of the First Baptist Church and Parsons Lions Club.

Aging conference set Oct. 22 in Chanute

CHANUTE — The Southeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging (SEKAAA) invites seniors, caregivers and families to attend the Aging = Living Conference, a one-day event dedicated to helping older adults live life to the fullest. The conference will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the SEK Impact Center, 1500 W. Seventh St., Chanute.

The conference will feature expert speakers, interactive workshops, and resource booths covering a range of topics, including healthy aging, financial planning, home safety, community resources, and ways to stay active and engaged. Admission includes access to all sessions, resource fair, lunch and materials.

Beekeepers to meet Sept. 11

INDEPENDENCE — The Montgomery County Beekeepers Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at Independence Community College West, 2615 W. Main St., in Independence. Beekeepers will share their mistakes and disasters while working with bees and how they learned from these mistakes. Bring stories.

These stories will help new beekeepers who may also have their stories. There will be a discussion time for various points of view as the membership can all share the different methods that work for and possibly learn better ways of beekeeping. Members encourage and welcome anyone interested in honeybees to attend the program and meet the beekeepers.

The Parsons Livestock Auction sold 903 cattle Wednesday.

Choice cows 176-189, canners-cutters 160-175, shelly cows 159 and down, bred cows up to $3,550, pairs up to $4,200, choice bulls 205-232, lower grades 204 and down.

Steers: Up to 400 pounds, 440-605; 400-500, 395-501; 500600, 365-461; 600-700, 370-425; 700-800, 293-385; 800 and over, 280-348.
