
Janet George, 71, of Parsons, a longtime business owner and banker, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025.
She was born on Sept. 17, 1953, at Oswego to Donald “Don” and Eleonora (Zeller) Free. She grew up at Oswego and attended Oswego schools, graduating from Oswego High School in 1971.
Janet married Steve George on Nov. 16, 1974, at Parsons. He preceded her in death on Sept. 16, 2023.
She moved to Parsons, where she worked at Peoples Savings and Loan and then for many years at Commercial Bank, where she was currently a vice president of customer service. Janet was also an entrepreneur, owning George’s Gifts and Cards and Main Street Travel.
Janet loved to travel. She has traveled to all 50 states and four continents through her travel business. She loved taking her clients and family on travel adventures, creating many memories and stories along the way. Family and work were very important to Janet. Serving customers at the bank, at George’s Gifts and at Main Street Travel created relationships that would last a lifetime. Her many years of service at Commercial Bank created co-worker friends into family bonds. She cherished her family and loved going on trips with them and going to Colorado to make memories with Mark and Melissa. Janet was always on the go and always doing something, all the while celebrating life and making memories.
She is survived by her son, Mark George and his wife, Melissa, of Salida, Colorado; her bonus sons, Mike George and his wife, Angie, of Humboldt and Roger George of Erie; her bonus grandson, Caleb George and his wife, Jessica, and their children; her sister, Cindy Spriggs and her husband, Joe, of rural Oswego; her sister-in-law, Dixie Joseph and her husband, Ron, of Parsons; several nieces and nephews including, Cara Johnson and her husband, Zach, of Oswego.
In addition to her husband, Steve, Janet was preceded in death by her parents; her nephew, Joey Spriggs; and her brother, Donnie Free.
A celebration of Janet’s life will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons. A private burial will be in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Friends may
drop by the funeral home to sign the register.
