Seven LCC art collection pieces showcased in Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg

From LCC

Seven works of art from Labette Community College’s collection are among others displayed in a special exhibit at the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg. The exhibit opened Aug. 3.

According to LCC Hendershot Art Gallery committee member Mike Brotherton, the exhibit in Lindsborg has been anticipated for over a year. The special exhibit will feature works by Kansas women artists whose pieces represent and reflect the Great Depression.

“Practical in her Art: Kansas Women Artists of the 1930s” will be available for viewing until Oct. 19. The following artists will have their works displayed in the exhibit: Mary Huntoon, Sue jean Covacevich, Clara Hatton, Anna Keener, Norma Bassett Hall, Avis Chitwood and Margaret Whittemore.

Five Whittemore color block prints and two Chitwood prints make up LCC’s contribution. Other Whittemore and Chitwood prints can be

found at the Sandzen Gallery and are contributed by Kansas State University in Manhattan, the Topeka Public Library and other private collections.

The Sandzen Gallery noted that, “despite the challenges of the Great Depression, the decade of the 1930s was a dynamic time for art making in Kansas and women artists worked tirelessly to keep the visual arts alive...”

“It’s a great opportunity to showcase part of the college’s collection, and it’s wonderful to see the college [LCC] working with other institutions,” Brotherton said.

The Birger Sandzen Memorial Art Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. More information on the Gallery and the Practical in her Art: Kansas Women Artists of the 1930s exhibit can be found on the Gallery’s website, www.sandzen.org.
