
ALTAMONT — Lester Lewis, 84, of Altamont passed away on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025, at his home.
Lester Lee Lewis was born on Aug. 27, 1940, to Roy Lester and Ruth (Cummins) Lewis in Hamilton. He grew up and attended school in the Hamilton area, graduating from Hamilton High School in 1958. Following high school, he attended vocational school at Pittsburg State University.
From 1961 to 1968, Lester honorably served as a member of the Big Red One in Germany and Vietnam.
Throughout the years, Lester had numerous jobs, including a mechanic for the Army National Guard, working at Walmart and driving a bus for USD 506.
A friend to many, Lester enjoyed living in Altamont. He also enjoyed mowing his yard, picking pecans and tearing down houses. One of his special talents was making no-bake cookies. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family.
In March 2000, Lester married Sharon Ball in Altamont. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include three sons, Tim Lewis (Nancy) of Hornbeck, Louisiana, Steve Lewis (Jennifer) of Topeka and Matt Lewis of Pittsburg; two stepdaughters, Tammy Volz (Randy) of Topeka and Kristy Hamilton (Russ) of Chanute; six grandchildren, Brock Pease (Jessica), Ashley Pease, Stuart Gatewood, Skylar Gatewood, Trysten Lewis (Meggen) and Stephanie Lewis; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Spencer Gatewood; and two sisters, Paulene Lewis Marlar and Dorthy Lewis.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home of Parsons. The Brown-Bishop Post 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will present military honors immediately after visitation at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the American Stroke Association or the Dementia Society of America. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS, 67357.
