LIBERTY — Montgomery County Sheriff Ron Wade said Thursday that an investigation has been opened in an animal cruelty case in which five dogs were found shot and left to die in a rural area of Montgomery County.
Wade emailed an altered image of the discovery showing the five dead dogs — each being a Labrador retriever mixed breed — that were found along the banks of the Verdigris River in an area known as McTaggart’s Dam. It is located between Independence and Liberty.
Deputies were called there Wednesday night. The animals were shot and left to die, Wade said, “discarded like trash, their lifeless bodies lying in the open for all to see.”
“Let us be clear: this is not only a crime, but also an act of pure evil,” he said.
“The senseless killing of innocent animals is not only unacceptable, but also a violation of everything we stand for in this community. We do not tolerate cruelty, and we will use every resource available to find who did this. If you think for one second that we’re going to let this slide, you’re wrong.”
The public is asked to provide information about anyone who might be involved.
“This was not hunting. This was not self-defense. This was slaughter,” Wade said.
