Parsons sees reduction in 2024 crime rate

The Parsons Police Department announced Monday improvements in public safety in the last year, according to crime index data released by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Overall, Parsons experienced a 14.57% reduction in total crime in 2024. Property crime — which affects the greatest number of residents and businesses — showed a notable decline, with property crime incidents dropping by 22.81% from the previous year, according to a release from the department.

“These results reflect the dedication of our officers, the support of the community, and the proactive efforts we’ve made to deter crime and improve quality of life for our citizens,” said Chief Robert Spinks. “Our focus on community-oriented policing and collaboration with local stakeholders is making a real difference.”

The trend across Kansas is a decrease in the index crimes (violent and property crimes). Index crimes include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault and battery, burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson.

Highlights from the 2024 crime data, according to police, include: — Overall crime decreased by 14.57%. — Property crime decreased by 22.81%. — Violent crime increased by 20% (an expected result tied to enhanced reporting and proactive interventions).

While the initial data reflects an increase in reported violent crime, this change is largely attributable to the launch of the Parsons Police Department’s Domestic Violence Unit (DVU) in mid-2023. The unit was established to address the often under- reported issue of domestic violence in our community, police said.

“With the new unit in place, victims of domestic violence are receiving stronger support and are more empowered to report abuse,” said Lt. Sherri McGuire, who oversees the initiative. “Our goal is not only to respond to these incidents but also to provide resources and help break cycles of violence.”

The increase in violent crime reports, therefore, does not indicate an actual surge in violence but an improved victim outreach, reporting accuracy and investigative focus.

At the same time, the decrease in property crime demonstrates the effectiveness of the department’s targeted patrols, enhanced investigations and partnerships with residents and businesses to promote crime prevention.

“We are encouraged by these positive trends and remain committed to building on this progress in 2025,” said Spinks. “By working together as a community, we can continue to create a safer, stronger Parsons.”

According to the 2024 data, Parsons had 422 total index crimes reported (114 violent crimes and 308 property crimes) for a crime rate of 45.7%. Parsons had 494 total index crimes reported in 2023 (95 violent crimes and 399 property crimes) for a crime rate of 53.2%.

In their release, police thanked the community for its support and encouraged residents to remain engaged in local crime prevention initiatives.
