
ALTAMONT — Susan Lynn (Hevel) Souders, 71, of Altamont died on Thursday, June 19, 2025, in her home surrounded by her family.
She was born on June 17, 1954, in Oswego to Bill and Wanda (Eckles) Hevel. She attended school in Oswego, elementary through high school, graduating as salutatorian of her class in 1972. She graduated from Labette Community College with an associate’s degree in nursing in 1985.
Susan married Paul “Buddy” Souders on Feb. 21, 1985, and they lived in Altamont for the duration of their marriage.
For more than 40 years, Susan worked as a nurse, first in the Labette Health Emergency Room and later for 13 years in the Cancer Center of Kansas. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and lifelong disciple of Christ. She was a very compassionate helper and comforting to many. She served in Haiti as a medical missionary. Besides helping others, she was a member of Christ Church of Labette County, a longtime member of the Oswego Christian Church and treasurer of the board of the Altamont Library. During her life, she and Buddy would take motorcycle trips to many U.S. landmark destinations, enjoyed visiting antique stores and sharing memories with each other on the front porch.
Survivors include her husband, Buddy Souders of the home; her four children, Sondra Hall and Chris Bachman of Parsons, Daphne Flores of Altamont, Macey Foster and Ken McNickle of Mound Valley and Ray Fisk of Carrollton, Texas; three stepsons, George Ray and Adriana of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, Daniel Souders of Aurora, Missouri, and Kevin Souders and Angela of Coffeyville; grandchildren, Kaylee Hall, Cody Hall, Morgan Pool, Crystal Schroeder, Tytan Hall, Nathan Flores, Natalie Flores, Dalton McNickle, Shanler Buddenhagen, Aspen Foster, Faith Foster, Ryan Fisk, Brittney Ray, Chelsea Ray and Lance Ray; 11 great-grandchildren; her brother, Mike Hevel and Cindy of Waverly; a sister, Laura Kaiser and Larry Rodgers of Plano, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, John William; and a granddaughter, Kinnie Hall.
The celebration of life in Jesus will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at Oswego Christian Church. Private inurnment will be at Oswego Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Christ Church of Labette County, Oswego Christian Church, Labette Health Foundation or Altamont Public Library.
