Phillip R. Long

MCCUNE — Phillip R. Long, 81, of McCune passed away the morning of Thursday, June 26, 2025, at his home.

Phillip Ray Long was born on July 9, 1943, to Alvin Leroy and Lula Belle (Dixon) Long in McCune. He grew up and attended school in McCune, graduating from McCune High School in 1962.

Following high school, Phillip began farming with his father and brothers. In 1968, he began working at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant where he operated heavy equipment for the Roads and Ground Department for 39 years until retiring in 2007. During those years, he also farmed and raised and trained horses.

Phillip enjoyed time with his children and grandchildren. He wanted nothing more than to run tractors and be in the fields helping his son farm, until his health wouldn’t let him. He was not shy when he was at an all you can eat buffet of catfish and shrimp.

On Aug. 10, 1974, Phillip married Marianne Pugh in Coffeyville. They were happily married for over 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Marianne Long, of the home; five children, Tammy Gero (Kevin) of Parsons, Tracy Higginson (Doug) of Thayer, Kimberly Sterling of McCune, Phillip Travis Long (Barbara) of McCune and Cynthia Long of McCune; nine grandchildren, Shala Williams (Derek) of Altoona, Tyler Gero (Kylie) of Parsons, Tanner Smethwick of Parsons, Andrew Long (Samantha) of McCune, Aaron Sterling of Carthage, Missouri, Abigail Long of Parsons, Alexander Long of McCune, Allison Long of McCune and Addison Long of McCune; five great-grandchildren; a brother, David Long (Barbara) of Parsons; and a sister, Linda Fosha of Neosho, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Wayne Long, Dean Long and Kenneth Long.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home of Parsons. Burial will follow at McCune Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to Gentiva Hospice. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS, 67357.
