Steven D. Hartman, 71, died on Friday, May 30, 2025.
He was born Oct. 27, 1953, to John D. and Dolores (Strahota) Hartman in Columbus. Steve was raised in Parsons, attending schools here and graduating from Parsons High School in 1971. During his high school and college years, he was the drummer for the Sensational Showmen, a band made up of his friends. The Showmen had a following throughout the region and was inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2009. He truly enjoyed, to this day, the brotherhood of the band members. He earned undergraduate and master’s degrees from Pittsburg State University.
Steve taught and coached football in Chanute, Lyndon, Altamont and Southeast high schools in Kansas. After leaving education, he worked at Prudential Insurance for 13 years.
He enjoyed watching the Kansas City Chiefs and the University of Kansas sports and, of course, any golf tournament on TV from his recliner.
He married Jackie Marshall on June 19, 1999. Steve loved his family, his kids, J.T. Harman (Emily) and Courtney Campbell (Clayton), all from Carl Junction, Missouri; his stepchildren, Jordan Boss (Steve) of Memphis, Tennessee, and Joey Crane (Elizabeth) of Overland Park; 11 grandchildren; his brother, John Hartman (Peggy) of Kansas City, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Karon Hartman; nieces, nephews and other sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and his faithful companion, Sophie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Hal Hartman; and some close friends.
A celebration of Steve’s life will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, in Parsons at the Parsons Convention Center at the Holiday Inn. The family suggests memorial contributions for Steve to the Don Barcus Memorial Scholarship fund with the Parsons Education Foundation, P.O. Box 994, Parsons, KS, 67357.
Steve will always be remembered for his love of people and his positive outlook. We will miss him.
