Raising $8,000 for the program, the Parsons Vikings football team hosted its annual charity golf tournament at the Katy Golf Course on Saturday.
“It’s always great to get together once a year with former players and fans that are passionate about Parsons football and want to support us,” Parsons head coach Jeff Schibi said. “It’s always a really good turnout. We appreciate everybody that comes out to support Parsons Vikings football.”
Over 50 golfers showed up for the tournament, including alums of the Vikings.
The tournament, a three-man scramble, 18-hole format, was rained out a few hours after it started.
“It was kind of an odd deal because in the surrounding area, there were places that didn’t even get rain,” Schibi said. “But we made the most out of the day. Nobody was too disappointed in having to cancel the remainder of the tournament. They were there to support a good cause and had a good time.”
Schibi and tournament staff did tally the scorecards to declare a winner — Preston Page, Mike Page and Brett Cares, who were 7-under through seven holes.
Joel Schibi won the longest drive award, which included a new driver. Odell Kendrick sank the longest putt to win a new putter. Ethan Hok won the closest to the pin challenge to win $200.
Schibi also put together a silent auction of various sports memorabilia. Items included a signed jersey from Kansas City Chiefs linebacker George Karlaftis, a signed baseball bat from Kansas City Royals star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., signed footballs from former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, a poster signed by Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball coach Bill Self, and various sports trading cards.
“That money will help feed the kids on road trips and buy some gear,” Schibi said. “It’ll fill equipment needs throughout the season.”
Schibi also thanked the dozens of sponsors that contributed to the tournament.
“We appreciate each of our sponsors,” Schibi said. “They have always helped us tremendously over the years with this tournament.”
